According to the manufacturers a pellet stove is likely to develop faults or problems as a result of lack of maintenance and or using poor quality pellets. Consider buying quality wood pellets to use in your stove as they burn more efficiently and reduce the amount of waste deposits in the heating appliance resulting in less required maintenance.

If a pellet stove is not burning properly, the problem could be a result of air leaks through door seals. Take a look at the door seal and make sure seals with a perfect fit to eliminate air leaks. Air leaks in a door seal can result in creosote buildup in you stove. Door and ash pan gaskets should be check and replaced periodically. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Use Quality Pellets
Pellet heating appliance can perform poorly if poor grade of pellets are used. Wood species does not affect pellet quality, moisture does. Buy quality wood pellets as they burn efficiently and reduce clogging and buildup. Practice cleaning the appliance as often as it is recommended by manufacturers, this can be daily, weekly or monthly depending on the manufacture requirements. Empty ash regularly and dispose the waste safely.
Stove won’t light
Most stove that will not light or have problems lighting can be fixed by a good cleaning. Burn pots can accumulate ash buildup or hard deposits that cover over the igniting element causing ignition problems. Stoves also use a pressure switch to disable the feed system in the event that the draft is low or not present. Cleaning the burn pot, heat exchanges, venting, ash traps and air intakes periodically will help keep your stove working properly.
Pellets Feeding Poorly
If the electrical components are working properly, turn on the stove to check how well pellets feed into the burn pot. Poor feeding of pellets may be a result of an obstruction to the auger, bridging, wet pellets or excessive dust buildup in the hopper. In this case, clean out the hopper, un-jam the device check for foreign objects such as children’s toys, paper, nails, phones or various other things that sometimes end up in hoppers unknowingly.
Another common problem with the auger is that it might have a faulty motor or worn auger. If it is dirty then use a brush to remove dirt and debris. Oiling the bearings may allow the motor to work properly. If the auger is warn it will need to be replaced.
Pellet Stove Burning Poorly
For stoves that produce soot or smoke, this can be an indication that the pellets are of poor quality or the stove and venting are in need of maintenance. Remove wastes and accumulated debris from stove, clean the stove and venting. Check door seals and replace if necessary. If the problems persist switch to a different pellet brand.
For optimal performance of the vent, check that the maximum number of 90⁰ elbows has not been exceeded and that the horizontal length does not exceed 5’ at any point in the venting.
Sometimes environmental conditions exist in or around a home. These conditions may be caused by tight home or prevailing wind directions. Take precautions installing your stove to make sure these things will not affect your appliance.
Tip
The best way to trouble shoot pellet stove problems is to take a look at all components in the appliance. Make sure that the device is clean as most problems develop as a result of lack of maintenance.
Fact
