Common Pellet Stove Issues & How to Fix Them
1. Air Leaks and Door Seals: A common issue in pellet stoves is air leaks through worn door seals, which can lead to poor burning and creosote buildup. Inspect your stove’s door seals regularly to ensure a tight fit. Preventative maintenance like replacing door and ash pan gaskets will help extend the life of your stove.
2. Use Quality Pellets: Pellet stoves perform best when high-quality pellets are used. Poor-quality pellets can lead to inefficiency, clogging, and excessive buildup. Opt for dry, quality pellets, as they burn cleanly and reduce the need for frequent maintenance.
3. Stove Won’t Light: If your stove refuses to light, it’s often a buildup of ash or debris in the burn pot that’s preventing ignition. Regular cleaning of the burn pot, heat exchangers, venting, and air intakes can solve most lighting problems.
4. Poor Pellet Feeding: If pellets aren’t feeding properly into the burn pot, it could be due to a jam in the auger, wet pellets, or excessive dust buildup in the hopper. Regularly check the hopper for obstructions and clean it out as needed. If the auger motor is faulty or the auger is worn, repairs may be necessary.
5. Pellet Stove Burning Poorly: If your stove is producing excessive smoke or soot, the issue may be with the pellets or the stove’s maintenance. Clean the stove and venting, check the door seals, and consider switching to a different brand of pellets. Ensure that your venting system is properly installed, with no more than 90-degree elbows and a horizontal length of no more than 5 feet.
6. Troubleshooting Tip: To keep your pellet stove working optimally, make sure to clean all components as recommended by the manufacturer. Regular maintenance prevents most issues from arising and ensures efficient operation.
Fact: There is no such thing as a maintenance-free pellet stove. All appliances require care and attention. A clean stove is a happy, efficient stove!
